1968 Tranniversary: Jason

The year 1968 was full of political unrest and innovation. The year began with the horrific Tet Offensive, which spurred anti Vietnam War protests. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated. Olympic athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in a salute to the Black Power movement during the playing of “Star Spangled Banner”. Richard Nixon won the presidential race and three astronauts on the Apollo 8 became the first humans to orbit the moon. The Beatles, “Hey Jude”, was the year’s number one single. Otis Redding, Cream, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Doors had in the top 20 singles for the year. In 1968, several notable films were released including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Funny Girl, The Graduate, The Odd Couple and The Lion in Winter. Top movie stars Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Barbra Streisand, Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, and Peter O’Toole.

The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland, CA to become the Oakland A’s. The Boston Celtics won the NBA Finals. The best cyclist in the world, Eddy Merckx, won the Giro d’Italia, and Peggy Flemming was the world figure skating champion.

According to the online encyclopedia glbtq.com, "In the aftermath of the riot at Compton's, a network of transgender social, psychological, and medical support services was established, which culminated in 1968 with the creation of the National Transsexual Counseling Unit [NTCU], the first such peer-run support and advocacy organization in the world".
